Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio won the debate against pro-Democrat CNBC “moderators”

Good analysis – lot of great clips!

CNBC GOP primary debate candidates CNBC GOP primary debate candidates

The CNBC debate was a debacle. Leftist Democrat moderators tried desperately to make conservative ideas look as unpalatable as possible. Insults were phrased as questions, and substantive answers were constantly interrupted. But several of the debaters shined, in teeth of blatant media bias. The only questions that were not biased were those from Jim Kramer and Rick Santelli.

The best clip goes to Ted Cruz:

CRUZ: The questions that have been asked so far in this debate, illustrate why the American people don’t trust the media. This is not a cage match. And if you look at the questions, Donald Trump, are you a comic book villain? Ben Carson, can you do the math? John Kasich, can you insult two people over here? Marco Rubio, why don’t you resign? Jeb Bush, why have your numbers fallen? How about talking about the substantive issues people care about…

Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” (2 Timothy 2:23-26)

Conversation with a casual acquaintance

Today, I was able to have about a 20 minute conversation with a casual acquaintance. The conversation started off about normal things like football, etc. I mentioned that I used to have season tickets for football, but that it interfered with Sunday church activities, because I teach a class at church. So he asked me, when do you teach the class? Is it after or before the worship service? I mentioned that it was before – at 9 AM and then afterwards we have worship at 10:30. So, I asked him if he went to church or had any church background. He said that he actually used to be a youth pastor over the youth ministry at a church. Wow, I said! I asked him which church it was and he mentioned some Baptist Church in the local area. So I asked him, do you still go to church? He said, sometimes, very rarely. Probing a little further, I asked, would you consider yourself to be a Christian now? He said, well actually I would probably consider myself to be an agnostic. I said, Wow! That’s a big change! What was it that caused you to become an agnostic after having been a youth pastor? He said, when he was a pastor he had to talk with people and do counseling after particularly difficult life situations, for example, when a woman would come in recently having lost a small child to some disease. He said that it was very frustrating with the lack of answers that he could give the person. All he could say was that he was sorry for her loss he felt like he couldn’t give any assurances that her child was in a better place, or why God would allow this to happen. I listened to him talk about a few more situations that were difficult – they all seemed to center around evil and suffering people go through.

So I asked him, so why did the task of talking to people in difficult situations, cause you to becoman agnostic – to question God’s existence? He said that it became difficult for him to reconcile the idea of an all loving, all powerful, all-knowing God with the types of tragedies that he saw happening to people. He said typically people who come up with this dilemma Express 1 of several possibilities that could be true:

  1. Either God is all loving, but not all powerful and wants to do something about the evil, but cannot.
  2. Or God is all powerful, but not all loving so God just doesn’t want to do something about the evil.
  3. Or God is neither all-powerful, all-loving nor all knowing, so he can’t do anything about the evil and suffering.
  4. Or there is no God.

I told him I understand what he’s saying, but I think he may be missing one option. What if God is all powerful, all loving, all knowing, and he has sufficient moral reasons for allowing the evil to happen or continue? He said that that fits under the idea that we cannot fully understand God, that he is a mystery and that his ways are mysterious. I shared with him that when evaluating whether God exists, we can’t just look at evil and suffering, and conclude He must not exist, but we must combine that evidence against God with all of the other evidence we have for the existence of God. For example, that the universe exists and must’ve had a cause, that there is design in the biological realm, etc. He then started to talk about natural selection, how it was a cruel process. For example why do mothers have so many babies? Or why do chickens lay so many eggs? And many of them die but the fittest survive. I was silent on this point with him. I wanted to let him know that I do believe in natural selection as well, but I didn’t go there right now. Instead I mentioned to him that none of this makes any sense, until you figure sin into the picture. Death came into the world when sin entered the world. Without sin in the world, there would be no disease or suffering. Sin is what corrupted everything – and yes, God allowed sin to happen. He understood that it was when Adam and Eve sinned. But, he said that the understanding of sin requires belief in the infallibility of the Bible. I told him that I didn’t necessarily agree with that point. In fact, I don’t think that you need to actually believe in the inerrancy of the Bible in order to be a Christian. It doesn’t say in the Bible that you have to believe that all 66 books are the inspired, inerrant word of God in order to be a Christian. I pointed out the example of the thief on the cross. That he wouldn’t have known about all 66 books, yet he was still saved. He agreed and said that Jesus said that he is in paradise with him right now. I said that the biblical requirement for salvation is “that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Rom. 10:9). Inerrancy is a separate issue. He then started to talk about how he wasn’t sure that all of this is true, and he feels like he couldn’t be a teacher or involved in the church if he wasn’t sure it’s true. So I talked to him a bit about the concept of “true beyond reasonable doubt” vs. certainty, that even if you believe that is 51% true , more likely that it was true than not true, you still believe enough to be saved.

At this point we were near the end of our walk, and I didn’t want to push it too far so I pretty much ended the conversation there. I hope to be able to continue this conversation again on another day. It ended very cordially and it sounded like he would be willing to speak again.

I woke up thinking of some questions regarding this situation early this morning.  I wish I would’ve asked him these questions yesterday:

  1. Now that you’re unsure if God exists, what kind of evidence would convince you that He does exist (beyond a reasonable doubt)?
  2. If Christianity were true (all the facts – such as God exists, is the creator of everything, Jesus died on a cross and rose again, etc.), in spite of all your unanswered questions about evil and suffering in the world, would you become a Christian?
  3. If the God described in the Bible exists, and has in fact let all this evil and suffering happen, what are your expectations from Him?  Do you expect Him to personally give an answer to you about why He has let all this happen and what His greater plan is regarding these tragedies?
  4. Have you read the book of Job?  Have you read about Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” (http://biblehub.com/2_corinthians/12-9.htm)?

These are just some of the questions I woke up thinking about this morning.  I hope I get the chance to ask him those questions soon “with gentleness and respect” (1 Peter 3:15b)!

Profound Sequence in John 8:31-32

One of the things I love about Scripture memorization is the practice time, when I can meditate deeply on the meaning of the passage I’m practicing. One such passage is:

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32

During a recent time when I was practicing this passage, something struck me that I’d never considered before. If you pay close attention to this passage, Jesus is communicating a profound sequence that takes place with his followers:

  1. Faith – to the Jews who had believed in Him. This is not just a generic “gotta have faith” pep talk. This is belief in the Son of the Living God!
  2. Obedience – “If you hold to My teaching”. Holding to His teaching rather than ignoring His teaching is obedience. Jesus wants obedience. He says “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46). Likewise, the half-brother of the Lord says “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22)
  3. Discipleship – “you are really My disciples.” True disciples follow and obey.
  4. Knowledge – “Then you will know the truth”. Obedience to Jesus and His teaching result in the disciple knowing it is true.
  5. Freedom – “the truth will set you free”. Following and obeying Jesus does not result in bondage, but rather in freedom. Jesus said “He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke 4:18b). That is freedom from bondage to sin. Romans 6:14 says “For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace”.

It is a journey that begins with faith, continues in obedience and the end result is freedom! Praise God!

Apologetics Class 10-25-2015

Currently, we are reading the book Unsilenced: How to Voice the Gospel by James Boccardo.  It is a great book about evangelism that also includes some information about Apologetics.

Hi All,

Class yesterday was good as usual.  Very good discussion.  Here is what we covered:

  1. Shared conversations we’ve had with some people and objections they raised.
  2. Watched a 2 min 38 sec video called “Is There Absolute Truth?” by Living Waters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lvSGCaicEg
  3. Practiced our memory verse Philemon 1:6 “I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ”.  Then we talked about the meaning of that – specifically why sharing our faith will help us to “have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ”.  We also looked at the difference in the HCSB translation.  Here is a list of how this verse looks in many different translations: http://www.biblestudytools.com/philemon/1-6-compare.html
  4. We read from page 112 to 119, covering problems 17 – 19.

Here are the questions we talked about during those sections:

  1. (pg. 112) Problem #17: I Don’t Like When People Push Their Religion on Me
    1. (pg. 112) It is hard to share the Gospel with someone who says this. What question can you ask them that may open a door (or “call their bluff”)?
    2. (pg. 112) Besides someone pushing their religion on them, is there an alternative reason why someone may not want you to share your faith with them?
    3. (pg. 113) Don’t “push your religion” on them, but do what instead?
  2. (pg. 114) Problem #18: What About the Guy on Death Row?
    1. (pg. 114-116) We’re all “on death row”… 150,000 people die each day. Does anyone really know when that final breath will come?
    2. Can you provide a biblical example of a “deathbed conversion”?
    3. What do the guy on death row and the average person have in common in God’s eyes?
  3. (pg. 117) Problem #19: What about the “Sinning Christians”? Those Hypocrites!
    1. (pg. 117) What would happen if people saw how serious their sin was in God’s eyes?
    2. (pg. 117) Is everyone who calls themselves a Christian actually a Christian? What did Jesus say about this?
    3. (pg. 118 – top) Since Christians still sin after they become Christians, why aren’t they necessarily hypocrites?
    4. (pg. 118) What question could you ask someone to get them to consider the fairness of judging all Christians by the “hypocrites”?

When we were discussing the last section about hypocrites, we also discussed how the person complaining about hypocrisy is actually agreeing with Jesus and we looked a bit at Matthew chapter 23:

Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.  Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

We also talked about 2 other teachings about or from Jesus:

Luke 23:39-43 (regarding deathbed conversion)  One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. ” Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.

And Luke 18:9-14 (regarding the contrast between the self-righteous Pharisee and the humble tax collector, who acknowledged his true predicament): To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable:  “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.  The Pharisee stood up and prayed about himself: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men–robbers, evildoers, adulterers–or even like this tax collector.  I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get.’  But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’  I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

Next week, we’ll finish up chapter 6, watch a few witnessing clips and may get started on chapter 7 if we have time…

Apologetics Class 10-18-2015

Currently, we are reading the book Unsilenced: How to Voice the Gospel by James Boccardo.  It is a great book about evangelism that also includes some information about Apologetics.

Hi All,

Great class today!  Great interaction/discussion.  We read pages 105-111, which covered ‘problems’ 14-16.  Here were the questions associated with those sections:

  1. (pg. 105) Problem #14: A Lot of People Have Had Followers Like Jesus.
    1. (pg. 105-106) How are Jesus’ followers different than those of the likes of David Koresh (Waco, TX)?
  2. (pg. 107) Problem #15: I’ve Done a Lot of Good Things.
    1. (pg. 107) What example could you give to cast doubt on the idea that people who do more good things than bad things go to heaven?
    2. (pg. 107) Why is it important to make a person see that doing good things has nothing to do with being forgiven of a crime?
    3. (pg. 108) Why does the “fine have to be paid” in order for the sin to be removed from your record?
  3. (pg. 110) Problem #16: There Are “So Many” Contradictions in the Bible
    1. (pg. 110) What question could you ask someone who claims there are a lot of Bible contradictions?
    2. (pg. 110-111) Several common examples of contradictions brought up by skeptics could be understood as ______________ rather than _______________.  What is an example?

Just prior to reading and discussing problem #15, we watched this short witnessing clip with Ray Comfort of Living Waters:

Good Works Don’t Save (5 ½ min video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7G2-FW-1C0

Here are the few additional items we talked about today and that I said that I’d send to you:

  1. On Guard Conference: Gary Habermas – The Resurrection of Jesus. This was the video that was mentioned when we were talking about 1 Corinthians and Galatians and how secular (skeptical) historians treat these letters as valid historical sources (1 hour 40 min video lecture, but a good one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNdmSQKyzgc
  2. Demolishing Supposed Bible Contradictions: Volume 1 – Introduction (Dr. Jason Lisle):   https://answersingenesis.org/answers/books/demolishing-supposed-bible-contradictions-1/introduction/

Next week we will probably finish up the ‘Problems’ chapter with 17-19.

Have a great week and I pray that we may have opportunities to use this information as we witness to those God brings into our paths!

Blessings to you all

AWANA message on John 1:1

Last night at AWANA, it was my turn (and great privilege) to give the “counsel time” message.  The counsel time message is a very short “sermonette” that we give to the clubbers.  Our leader for the Truth and Training section (which is the 3rd – 6th graders) wanted some of us leaders to take some of the verses that the clubbers are memorizing and expound on their meaning so that the clubbers will know what they are memorizing and will not just be memorizing words.

The leader split up the group into 3rd-4th grade and 5th-6th grade.  I was given the task of teaching to the 3rd and 4th grade kids.  One verse that AWANA clubbers memorize starting in 3rd grade is John 1:1. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” As I hear the kids recite the verse, I often ask them if they know what it means – particularly the phrase “the Word”.  Almost unanimously, they are not able to explain it, or give the incorrect explanation.  Because of this confusion, I decided that my teaching would focus on that verse.

So, I created a power point presentation to help guide the teaching  Here are the 18 slides I used:

It was a great session!  It lasted about 15 minutes and there was a ton of interaction and excitement from the kids.  I was so encouraged to see them eager to learn about this important topic.

There was even an opportunity to get into a little bit of apologetics.  One 9 year old 4th grader in the front had a very hard time wondering “who made God?”  This is not the first time I’ve heard this objection from a 4th or 5th grader.  I told the kids that no one made God, but that God is eternal – He has no beginning and will have no end – He just is.  She didn’t understand how God could just be.  I tried to explain how it is difficult for us to understand the concept of eternity since we are living in time.  But if you think about it, something must’ve always existed and it is God that always existed (the uncaused first Cause or “prime Mover”, which was a concept advanced by Aristotle).  The AWANA leader interjected that there are some things in the Bible that are hard to understand, but we just have to have faith, because it is in God’s word.  I wanted to make sure that the kids know that it is okay to ask questions and that there are good answers available.  I know that at this age (8-10), kids have a hard time grappling with abstract concepts like this – they are much better with concrete concepts, but they are memorizing this verse, so I thought it was important that they know what it means.  The girl ended up saying “I’m just going to ask Jesus when I get to heaven”.  I love that answer!

Dr. Ben Carson Defends His Faith on the O’Reilly Factor

There was a very interesting exchange between Bill O’Reilly and Dr. Ben Carson last night on the O’Reilly Factor. Here is the link to the video: http://insider.foxnews.com/2015/10/12/bill-oreilly-ben-carson-are-you-really-creationist

The exchange starts at about 3:35 into the clip and goes to 4:47.  Here is the text of the exchange:

O’Reilly: Now, are you really a creationist? Do you subscribe to Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden and that’s where we came from?

Carson: Well I certainly believe that God is our creator. And interestingly enough, if you look at our founding document, the Declaration of Independence, it talks about certain inalienable rights given to us by our Cre-a-tor (that’s how he said the word).

O’Reilly: Right, but that can be intelligent design, you know, and intelligent design leads to evolution. But some people – fundamentalist religious people – believe that, look Adam and Eve were there and that’s the way it says in Genesis and that’s what happened. Where are you on that?

Carson: Well I think people are certainly allowed their private beliefs. I know a lot of people say that I believe that the earth is 6,000 years old, and they have no basis for saying that. I don’t know how old the earth is… It says “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” and there’s a period there. You don’t know how much time elapsed. But, the other thing is that people don’t realize is that He’s God. If He wanted to create an earth that was billions of years old, He could do it. They can’t do it. How come they’re always trying to put themselves in the same category as God? I happen to believe in God.

O’Reilly: Well they’re trying to diminish your intellect, that’s what they try to do.

So, as I considered this exchange, I wondered how I would’ve responded to O’Reilly’s questions. I think Dr. Carson did a decent job defending his position, but as politicians do, he didn’t directly answer the question. I think he was trying to side-step the label “creationist” but still affirm the truths of creation. I respect that. But I think he should’ve addressed the question of Adam and Eve more directly.

If I had been there and been asked that, I may’ve asked Bill whether he believed in Jesus and if so, did he know what Jesus said about this issue? I mean presumably, O’Reilly does believe in Jesus – he claims to be a Roman Catholic and he even wrote a book about Jesus. The truth is that Jesus did address this issue. Jesus said:

“Haven’t you read,” He replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’” (Matthew 19:4)

So, as a Christian, that involves following Jesus, having faith in Him and believing His teaching. I would be interested to hear Bill’s answer to that.

Aside from Jesus believing in Adam and Eve, there is even a scientific case being made for Adam and Eve:

Modern-day DNA research is confirming the biblical account of Adam and Eve, according to one genetics expert.

Answers in Genesis’ Georgia Purdom has recently released a documentary explaining her findings and the scientific support for the records presented in Genesis.

“One of the most compelling genetic evidences for an original human couple created by God is mitochondrial DNA research done by creation geneticist, Dr. Nathaniel Jeanson,” Purdom says. “He clearly shows that the common human female ancestor of us all (biblical Eve) lived within the biblical timeframe of several thousand years ago.”

Jeanson has also done research disproving the evolutionary timescale.

What the scientific jargon breaks down to is this: If evolution were true, if men and women had been roaming the planet for years, there would be more genetic diversity.

By focusing on the DNA, these scientists have been able to evaluate that men and women can trace their roots back to a man and woman, Jeason writes.

Though Jeason’s timeline differs, his research echoes a study claiming all men can trace their lineage to a single man who lived 135,000 years ago, a “Genetic Adam.”

“The Y chromosome is passed down identically from father to son, so mutations, or point changes, in the male sex chromosome can trace the male line back to the father of all humans,” LiveScience’s Tia Ghose writes. “By contrast, DNA from the mitochondria, the energy powerhouse of the cell, is carried inside the egg, so only women pass it on to their children. The DNA hidden inside mitochondria, therefore, can reveal the maternal lineage to an ancient Eve.”

For creationists, the scientific evidence backs not only the existence of Adam and Eve and the truth of Genesis, but the overwhelming support for the need of Christ in a broken world.

Without Adam, Eve and original sin, Purdom says, we wouldn’t have a need for a Savior—and salvation wouldn’t be a necessity.

But through this research, geneticists are proving the case for Christ, not just creation.

“We need the good news, grace and life, which is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ,” Purdom says. “Jesus is the solution to the problem of evil that began in Genesis 3. Paul made this connection very clear in Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15.”

I might also have asked Bill whether he had actually investigated the evidence for creation. Dr. Carson, as a neurosurgeon, certainly would’ve had much education in evolutionary biology. So the charge cannot be made that Dr Carson has not investigated evidence for the naturalistic theories of our origins. But I don’t know if the same thing can be said for Bill. He (Bill) referenced intelligent design, but in the same breath said that leads to evolution. I would have also wanted to know what he meant by the word “evolution” as this is often used has an equivocation. Sometimes by “evolution” people mean the classic neo-Darwinian theory that all life, in its diversity, descended from a single cell organism. But evolution can also mean simply “change over time”, which is uncontroversial, and is agreed upon by creationists.

So, there is certainly more Dr. Carson could’ve responded with, but then again, the segment was very short and O’Reilly always cuts off his guests if they start to go into lengthy rebuttals. Anyway, I appreciate that Dr. Carson at least gave the minimal defense that he did.

Apologetics Class 10-11-2015

Currently, we are reading the book Unsilenced: How to Voice the Gospel by James Boccardo.  It is a great book about evangelism that also includes some information about Apologetics.

Hello All,

Well, we didn’t do any reading yesterday.  Instead, we just caught up on the questions that we didn’t cover from last time.  Here are the questions we covered yesterday:

  1. (pg. 95) Problem #10: No One Can Be Sure He’s Going to Heaven.
    1. (pg. 95) How can you answer this objection in a way that points people to Jesus (and not to yourself)?
    2. (pg. 95) What’s the difference between “acting religious” and “pointing people to Jesus”?
  2. (pg. 97) Problem #11: God Could Never Forgive Me of All the Wrong I’ve Done.
    1. (pg. 97) How could you use the story of Moses, Paul or even David to minister to someone who says the above statement?
  3. (pg. 99) Problem #12: Well That’s Good for You, but It’s Not True for Everyone Else.
    1. (pg. 99) How could you give an example that if something is true, it is true whether someone knows it or not?
    2. (pg. 99-100) What would Jesus have said about the above statement? Did He make any exclusive claims in the Bible (like in the book of John)?
  4. (pg. 101) Problem #13: Well, All of the World Religions “Teach the Same Things.”
    1. (pg. 102-103) Provide an example showing that all world religions do not teach the same thing.

We had very good discussion on these – thanks for your participation!

Also, at the beginning of the class, we watched this short video from the One Minute Apologist:

Are Evangelism And Apologetics Complimentary? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rln559rzYM

We will continue reading with “Problem #14” next week!

Pondering Election and Predestination

It has been a long standing aspect of my Christian walk that I’ve questioned whether the prevailing (Calvinist) understanding of election and predestination is true. It really boils down to the reconciliation of the following facts:

  1. God is omnipotent
    (Isaiah 14:26-27; 10:6; 32:17,27; 51:15; Lam. 3:37; Matt. 19:26b)
  2. God is omniscient
    (Heb. 4:13; 1 Sam. 2:3b; Ps. 33:13-15; Job 9:4)
  3. God selects (elects/predestines) certain individuals to be saved and others to go to hell before the creation of the world
    (John 6:37,44,65; 8:47; 15:19; 8:28-30; 9:10-24; 11:7; Eph. 1:3-8,11; 2:1-10; 2 Tim. 1:9; Col. 3:12; 2 Thess. 2:13; 2 Pet. 1:3; Acts 13:47-48; Deut. 30:6)
  4. God wants all men to be saved
    (1 Tim. 2:3-4; John 3:36)
  5. God doesn’t want anyone to perish and He wants all men to come to repentance
    (2 Pet. 3:9; Mk. 1:15; John 3:16; Ezek. 18:23; John 7:17)
  6. All men are not saved. Many do not repent and do perish.
    (Matt. 7:13-14; 22-23; 25:46; Luke 13:34; Acts 7:51)

So, could it be that we’re misunderstanding election and predestination? 1 Tim. 2:3-4 and 2 Peter 3:9 are very clear and unambiguous. I checked the Greek on the word translated ‘all’. The Greek word ‘Pas’, means “each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything”. I also checked the word for ‘Men’, which is ‘Anthropos’. It means: a human being, whether male or female; generically, to include all human individuals. So, these verses tell us in very clear terms that God wants ALL PEOPLE to be saved. Although God is omnipotent and omniscient, His word tells us (and we also see plainly) that all men are not saved and do not repent. So, those facts lead me to conclude that God gives men the free will to resist Him or to choose Him. As C.S. Lewis said in “The Great Divorce”:

‘There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, “Thy will be done,” and those to whom God says, in the end, “Thy will be done.” All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. Those who knock it is opened.’

So, if that is true, how can the verses be true that say God elects people to be saved before the foundation of the world? Well, I think the key may be Romans 8:29, which says “For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren”. The Greek word translated “foreknew” is Proginosko, which means “to have knowledge before hand”. So, could it be that God has foreknowledge, looking into the future, of those who would believe if presented with the gospel and then elects those individuals? He can then work that out by placing them in places and times where they will in fact hear the gospel:

“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.” Acts 17:24-27

So, for those who dogmatically and unquestionably hold to the Calvinist view of election/predestination, I ask you to humble yourselves and consider these facts from God’s word and how they might be reconciled. I want to emphasize that I strongly believe that we are saved by God’s grace, not through our own works. I want to make that clear, so that no one will misunderstand my message here. I don’t claim to have it all figured out, but am searching and digging into God’s word for the truth.

One additional thing.  John Piper tries to address my concern in an article entitled “Are There Two Wills in God? Divine Election and God’s Desire for All to Be Saved”.  I think in that article he really has to do gymnastics to get these verses to mean what he needs them to mean.  Also, there is a response to John Piper’s article by the Society of Evangelical Arminians called “John Piper: Are There Two Wills in God? A Response.”  These are great articles for additional reading on this very important topic.

Apologetics Class 10-4-2015

Currently, we are reading the book Unsilenced: How to Voice the Gospel by James Boccardo.  It is a great book about evangelism that also includes some information about Apologetics.

Great class today.  Thanks for your participation.  You’re doing a lot better on your memory verse (Philemon 1:6) – keep up the good work!

Today we read pages 92 – 104, covering problems 9-13.  Here are problems 9-13 that we covered along with the questions:

  1. (pg. 92) Problem #9: What if Someone Never Hears About Jesus?
    1. (pg. 92) Has anyone lived a “good life” (the author references a talk show host referring to some theoretical person in Tibet before the invention of Radio or TV who has lived a “good life”)?
    2. (pg. 92) What should you say to a person who brings up the problem about people who’ve never heard of Jesus?
    3. (pg. 93) Why is it important to get the focus off of “unknown people half way around the world”?
  3. (pg. 97) Problem #11: God Could Never Forgive Me of All the Wrong I’ve Done.
    1. (pg. 97) How could you use the story of Moses, Paul or even David to minister to someone who says the above statement?
  5. (pg. 101) Problem #13: Well, All of the World Religions “Teach the Same Things.”
    1. (pg. 102-103) Provide an example showing that all world religions do not teach the same thing.

Since we didn’t even come close to finishing discussion of those questions, we will start by finishing the discussion of problems 10 – 13 next week.  Thanks for the feedback that this discussion time is important to you all.  I will make sure from now on that we finish discussing the questions.

We started off the hour by watching this short (~2 min) video by Sean McDowell:

What Is Apologetics And Does It Still Matter For This Generation?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2_GOceY73Y

Then, after the reading of problem #9 “What if Someone Never Hears About Jesus?”, we watched this ~6 min video featuring Ravi Zacharias responding to a similar question from someone in the audience:

What of those who haven’t heard about Jesus?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImKLHfslVa4

During his answer, he opens with this passage:

Acts 17:24-27 The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.

And then he finishes up with a story about someone who came to Christ by having dreams for 7 years about Jesus.

Finally, I mentioned a video which I was going to show you but we didn’t have time where Greg Koukl answers the same question referring to Romans chapters 1 & 2.  Here is that video (~4 min):

What about those who’ve never heard?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIXs5wOSVk4

Hope you have a great week!
