I’ve heard a lot of complaining recently about the electoral college system we have. While I won’t defend Donald Trump in particular (as I’ve said in another post), I do want to say 2 things about the electoral college:
- First, take a look at this image:
Above are the 2016 Presidential Election results by county in the United States of America. If you were to take a quick look at this map and be asked what is the primary color on there, what would you say? If you were not color blind (or blinded by your world view and disappointment), you’d probably say RED. That’s right – most of the counties in the United States voted for Donald Trump. So, while it’s true that Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, those who want to do away with the electoral system because it is “not fair” would have to explain to all those people in the red areas why they should be over-ruled by the relatively few (and highly populated) blue areas. I believe that the founders were wise in coming up with this system that even gives rural voters a chance to have their voices heard. For this reason alone, I believe it should be kept in place. According to this Wikipedia article, Donald Trump is the 5th president in our history who has won the presidency without winning the popular vote.
- Secondly, we have to keep in mind that the candidates knew the rules ahead of time and ran their campaigns a certain way because of those rules. If the rules had been different, I’m sure those campaigns would’ve been run differently – I’m sure Trump would’ve campaigned a lot more in New York, Chicago and all of California and ignored the middle of the country!
